Hola!
Today let’s discuss a fun subject, learning how to spell your name in Spanish. This post will give you a simple tip to help you learn not just your alphabet, but specifically how to spell your name in Spanish.
If you learn how to spell only one thing – a word you will not easily forget – you should find that many other words are also easier to spell. This should help you to start picking up other words faster and your brain should start to automatically think, “Hey, this is probably how that word is spelled.”
I found that while I knew some letters in Spanish before, because I wasn’t really practicing spelling them I would shy away from having to spell something. My brain would think, “This is probably spelled this way…” but I would spell it in my head with the English alphabet, never taking the time to spell it with Spanish letters.
Today we’ll learn how to spell our names and hopefully, you’ll be learning how to use all of the letters in the Spanish alphabet soon after.

The Spanish Alphabet
Aside from the obvious pronunciation difference between the Spanish and English alphabets, there are of course some letter differences as well. From the Ñ to the Ll there are so many different pronunciations to learn.
Thank goodness we don’t need to learn them all today. Only the letters for your name. However, if you are trying to learn all of the letters in the Spanish alphabet, I really recommend this video from Butterfly Spanish. She teaches this so well!
While the Spanish alphabet as a whole can be intimidating, I encourage you to focus only on the letters in your first name. For me, that’s six letters. It makes it so much less intimidating when you eliminate a huge amount of things you have to learn and memorize. Plus, you already know how to spell your name in English. That’s not something you would have to learn like you would with other Spanish words.
To help you learn your name in Spanish, start by Googling the Spanish alphabet or watching the video I mentioned above and familiarizing yourself with the sound of the letters for your name.
A Tip For Learning Your Name In Spanish
You’ll need to find your own way of remembering how to pronounce different letters in Spanish especially if this is your second language. It’s not going to just automatically pop into your head the same way as the English alphabet does for you, not right away at least.
My best tip for this is to make a little phonetic game out of it in your head.
The day I was learning this I texted my sister and told her I had figured out a way to phonetically remember how to spell my name in Spanish. I recognize though that phonetic pronunciations are really only great if English is your first language.
I highly recommend you write your version down – share it with me in the comments! – and tell someone so that you have someplace to look back on in case you ever forget it. This simple act of writing it and sharing it, or teaching someone else how to spell it your way will help you to remember it.
After you’ve practiced for a while, try to get someone to give you a little spelling bee type of challenge. Have them ask you how you spell your name, their name, celery, potato, or other similar simple words. Finding ways to use the letters you just learned will help you to remember the letters for longer.
Keep Spelling
To help with the long term, keep spelling, constantly. This will help you to remember your letters. Spell anything. It doesn’t matter what you spell or what the word says. It doesn’t even have to be done out loud. Just keep spelling.
I like to spell the signs in stores when I find myself walking around. While waiting in line at a store a few months ago I saw this sign and just kept repeating the letters to myself. It was encouraging to see that I actually remembered how to read all the letters
Doing this as often as I see a sign has helped me to feel more confident and like I can actually spell things out loud for others.
You can also try to spell things for other people. If someone asks you for something and they don’t quite hear you right, spell the word for them.
